They say that luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. Well, I recently had to cut short a planned 16-day self-drive tour of Saudi Arabia only on the fourth day due to coronavirus restrictions announced by the government. My original itinerary included mostly hotel stays during the first week and mainly camping on the second week – as I hoped to make my way around remote sites in Tabuk Province.

If you're planning on heading out on a group or self-drive safari, photography gear is big on the list. While proper equipment may be expensive, it's well worth the investment in chronicling and enjoying the full safari experience. Some photography outlets offer gear rental options in popular safari destinations around the world. Unfortunately, safari photos on an iPhone just can't have the same effect. The whole attraction of safari photography is to capture wildlife clearly from a distance. Evidently, you don't want to make the evening news for creeping up close to a lion or rhino with your camera phone.

The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed how we've lived and worked in 2020. These changes extend into 2021 and beyond, as certain major companies have made remote work the permanent norm for many of their employees. The work-from-home trend has meant that the line between our professional and personal lives has been significantly blurred.

"Over there is where the Paris-Dakar Rally used to end," said my guide when I travelled to Lac Retba, Senegal, a couple of years ago (also known as Lac Rose). Many of the local people I spoke to, living along the salt-producing pink lake, were nostalgic about the rally's heyday. I had heard a lot about the mythical Dakar Rally growing up in the late 1970s and '80s. Being there felt a bit surreal.

No expat experience in Saudi Arabia would be truly complete without venturing out into the desert, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of the best and most memorable ways of doing that is by trekking or trail running through the rocky and mountainous parts of the Arabian desert.

The bohemian neighbourhoods are my favourite part of any large city I visit. It’s sacrilegious for me not to stop by Soho when in New York City to take in the art galleries, trendy coffee shops and cast-iron architecture. It’s also true that my French-born wife, who has been responsible for passing on to me a true appreciation for artisanal pastries, will always also make sure that we find the perfect pastry shop serving authentic French chocolate croissants to accompany a great cappuccino.
